It’s important to celebrate how close we are to nature in Wellington – from the Town Belt to the Zoo to the Coast, you’re never far away from amazing animals and plants to inspire us to help care for wildlife.

We celebrate conservation all year round at the Zoo, and love Conservation Week as it is another way we can shine a light on how we can all get involved in conservation in our ‘backyards’ and help to protect our local animals and plant life.

An easy way to help protect native wildlife is to keep your dogs on a lead when you’re at the beach. This will help to protect the Kororā Little Penguins that live on our Wellington coastline. Alternatively, you can take your dog off lead at the great dog beaches around our city.

$1 from every Zoo entry purchased over Labour Weekend will be donated to the Wellington Zoo Conservation Fund. This fund enables the Zoo to support conservation projects in its own backyard and around the world.

Our latest local conservation project is working with the Department of Conservation to monitor geckos and skinks on Matiu Somes Island, helping to protect some of our smaller locals. The Conservation Fund allows Zoo staff to participate in amazing conservation initiatives like this.
